Mark Prior’s return date remained a mystery Wednesday, one day after he came to Chicago for a series of tests on his sore right Achilles tendon and stiff right elbow at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Prior may begin throwing again in two to seven days, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said, after the MRI injection wears off. Prior estimated he wouldn’t go until Saturday.

The Cubs aren’t setting a timetable for his return to major-league action, though indications are he’s on target to be ready for the Cubs’ West Coast trip to Los Angeles and San Diego on May 11-16.

“Optimistically, that would be great if it was around mid-May, give or take a week,” Prior said.

“I’m going to be honest with myself. If I don’t feel like I’m ready, I’m not going to push it because I don’t want to have to take another two weeks off after I try to make a comeback. When I do start, I want to be ready to take it all the way through the season and the playoffs.”
