Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry defended the organization against charges the team underplays the extent of players’ injuries, particularly in Kerry Wood’s case.
“People think we’re being disingenuous with [the] time frame,” Hendry said. “It’s no different than [Indianapolis Colts GM] Bill Polian standing up last year and saying, ‘Edgerrin James is going to miss a week or two with a tweaked [hamstring].’ And then 12 days later in his workout to show he can play, [James] tweaks it again and misses four games instead of two.
“That didn’t mean somebody didn’t tell the truth.”
SHUFFLING: Sergio Mitre and Matt Clement will start in Friday’s doubleheader, but Saturday’s spot is open. The Cubs could call on Glendon Rusch or bring up Triple-A right-hander Jon Leicester.
