A seventh person was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping and ordered held without bail Sunday in the beating death of a Chicago man last month behind Juarez High School.
Victor McManigal, 17, of the 3200 block of North Spaulding Avenue is accused in the July 7 beating death Ruben Torres, 43. The six others were charged last month.
Assistant State’s Atty. Julie Egan said Sunday that the seven young males had been at a party with Torres when one of the suspects told the others that Torres had taken money from the suspect’s uncle. The group lured Torres to a field behind the school and beat him with their feet and fists, and eventually with beer bottles and pipes, Egan said.
Over the course of the night, the group left and returned at least four times to beat Torres further, she said.
A school engineer later found Torres dead, police said.
McManigal gave a videotaped confession admitting that he beat Torres, Egan said. He had no prior records, she said.
The suspects are all members of a gang, according to court records.
