A grand jury Friday indicted the convicted sex offender accused of the abduction, rape and slaying of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford.

The indictment charged John Evander Couey, 46, with first-degree murder, burglary, battery, kidnapping and sexual battery.

Prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty.

The Citrus County public defender’s office, which is representing Couey, declined to comment.

Jessica disappeared Feb. 23 after being snatched from her bedroom.

Couey, a convicted sex offender who had been living within sight of the home she shared with her father and paternal grandparents, was tracked to Augusta, Ga., and arrested March 17. He confessed the next day, sheriff’s officials said.

Jessica’s body was found March 19 near her home.
