About 100 residents listened as developers told the Elgin Planning and Development Commission about plans for housing subdivisions and businesses west of the city.

Residential Land Fund I LP wants to build 900 homes and 100 acres of retail in an unincorporated area west of Elgin, but residents of Campton Township and other communities who attended the hearing say the project will put pressure on schools, harm the environment and increase traffic.

Engineers working for the developer said that plans for Stony Creek East and West subdivisions would maintain and improve wetlands and other natural features in the area.

Plans call for adding 17 acres of wetlands and native plantings, said Paul Ulatowski, general partner of Henderson & Bodwell, a land planning and engineering firm working for the developer.

The hearing will continue at 7 p.m. Monday in Hemmens Cultural Center.
