Longwave
“There’s a Fire”
New York’s Longwave has toured non-stop since its first album to make a name for itself, but to keep that name, the band needed to put out a solid album No. 2. With 50 percent of the members of New York’s Longwave being new and veteran producer John Leckie working his magic (Radiohead, Stone Roses, Pink Floyd), “There’s A Fire” sounds ready-made for the big time, whether in the chugging “River (Depot Song),” “We’re Not Gonna Crack” or the uncharacteristically upbeat “Tell Me I’m Wrong.” Whether the album raises the band to–in the words of one song–the “Next Plateau” is anyone’s guess, but there’s no question Longwave’s at least as worthy as its peers such as the Strokes, Walkmen and Interpol.
Best track: “The Flood,” a glimmering, Doves-like ballad that drifts along on shimmering effects and a pulsing beat.
