We interviewed 18-year-old tennis star Maria Sharapova in Manhattan recently. She has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the world by the World Tennis Association. Sharapova hails from Nyagan, Russia, and is enrolled in high school (Keystone National) on the Internet. Her favorite subject is biology.
Where is your favorite place to play tennis?
Wimbledon, just because of the tradition and the grass courts.
What other sports do you enjoy?
I like soccer a lot. I like to watch basketball, but I am very terrible playing it.
What was it like growing up in Russia?
I was born in Siberia and then I moved to a town on the Black Sea when I was 2. It is really beautiful. The weather is like Florida’s and the sea is black and so are the rocks.
Where is your favorite place to shop?
New York City is definitely one of my favorites. I actually like to shop in Asia because you can find a lot of things you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
What music do you like?
I like pop and contemporary music. I like groups like Maroon 5, U2, Coldplay, Gwen Stefani.
