The Church of England’s first black archbishop said Friday that he has received letters containing racial slurs since being appointed to the position.

“When I get these letters, I actually pray for the people who have written them,” Archbishop of York John Sentamu told British Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The Uganda-born Sentamu, 56, is to be enthroned next month. He will be the church’s second-highest cleric after Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
