Yes, that’s the Illinois High School Association’s Class AA cross-country regional being run in Wisconsin on Saturday.

And that’s just fine with the IHSA, according to Antioch athletic director Steve Schoenfelder.

“The first year we had a regional up there, there was one school complaining, `Why are we in Wisconsin?'” Schoenfelder said. “We told the state and they understood it was a top-flight course and had no problem holding the regional there.”

The course at Fox River Park, about 5 miles from the school, has been the Sequoits’ home course for the last 30 years. It is, as Schoenfelder said, beautiful, with mature trees and a challenging layout. And Schoenfelder said the Kenosha County parks department has been very accommodating to the out-of-state visitors.

In the pink

Tony Savino’s feisty, physical play certainly draws the attention of opponents.

So too does the pink tape on the blade of his hockey stick.

“At first it was just a joke with my friends,” said Savino, 17, a senior center at Lake Forest. “After a couple of games, I did well, so I had to keep it. Other teams joke and laugh at the tape, but when we score, I get to rub it in their faces.”

The left-handed-shooting Savino was the team’s leader last season in penalty minutes. He is the only Scout with pink tape.

“The pink tape is just fun for me,” he said. “Heck, my own teammates laugh at me for having it. So why have it? Just because.”

Fast work

Opposing offenses trying to pull a quick one on Neuqua Valley soccer defender Kyle Wulf might as well just forget it.

“You notice Wulf as soon as he gets near the ball,” said Wildcats coach Jim Johns. “The incredible rate he closes on a player; holy cow. It’s like the other guys are in slow-mo.”

The senior’s tenacity on the ball and in the air has helped fifth-ranked Neuqua to a 19-3-2 record and Upstate Eight title.

He wants more.

“To win state or get close to winning, that’s our main goal this year,” said the center back.
