Republican Sen. George Allen of Virginia said Sunday that it would be appropriate for any White House aide to step aside if indicted in the CIA leak investigation. The grand jury that has investigated the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity is set to expire Friday.

REVIEW OF REPORTER SUGGESTED: The New York Times’ ombudsman said the newspaper should review reporter Judith Miller’s journalism practices to address “issues of trust and credibility” in her role in the CIA leak investigation. Miller’s attorney called the newspaper’s recent criticism of her “shameless.” Miller went to jail for 85 days rather than testify to a grand jury investigating the leaking of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity.

COLLEGE TO WELCOME WOMEN: Valley Forge Military College, the last all-male military college in the country, will accept women beginning next fall. Officials at the Wayne, Pa., school estimate enrollment for women could reach 20 percent within five years. Most military colleges went coed soon after the Supreme Court ruled in 1996 that they couldn’t bar women and still receive public funds.

TRIAL STARTS IN GIRL’S DEATH: Jury selection is set to being Tuesday in Sarasota, Fla., in the trial of Joseph Smith, the man captured on video taking 11-year-old Carlie Brucia by the arm at a car wash on Super Bowl Sunday 2004. Four nights later, Brucia was found dead at a nearby church.

GORBACHEV KANSAS-BOUND: The small town of Lindsborg, Kan., is preparing for a visit from former Soviet leader Mikhai Gorbachev, who will visit the home of the Karpov Chess School this weekend to launch a worldwide campaign of promoting peace through chess.

BITE MAY COST GIRL ARM: A 14-year-old girl at a Pottstown, Pa., school may lose her arm after being bitten by a poisonous copperhead snake at school, authorities said. A 17-year-old boy had brought the snake to school to show to other students.
