Inspectors for the Dumpster Task Force closed Hung Fung Food Supply at 465 W. 24th St. on Monday after finding at least 280 mouse droppings, according to a report from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.
Inspectors went to the warehouse, which supplies local restaurants, after getting complaints about garbage in the area. Mouse droppings were found on pallets that contained packaged food items such as fortune cookies, water chestnuts and soy sauce, according to the report. Droppings also were found on a pallet of carry-out containers.
“What troubles us is that this establishment was bad enough to shut down and they supply food to restaurants,” Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Michael Picardi said in a statement. “If the businesses at the top of the food chain fail to keep their operations clean, it spells bad news for the restaurants who buy from them and the customers who eat at those restaurants.”
Also last week, Health Department inspectors shut down the Corner Bakery Cafe at 123 N. Wacker Drive after finding rat feces and a rat nest there.
The inspection was triggered by two customers who called 311 to report that they saw live rats at the restaurant, said department spokesman Tim Hadac.
Inspectors also found an inaccessible hand-washing sink, a poorly maintained ice machine that contained black mold, and cooked chicken at unsafe temperatures.
