A fire swept through a hospital in northeastern China on Thursday, killing at least 39 people, the government said.
Thousands of neighbors watched helplessly as patients jumped from third- and fourth-floor windows after rescuers tried but failed to reach them, the official Xinhua news agency said Friday.
The fire broke out Thursday at the largest hospital in Liaoyuan, in Jilin province.
An initial investigation showed the fire started in a power distribution room, Xinhua reported. About 183 patients, 20 in critical condition, were taken to seven other hospitals.
