Former Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed became the first election casualty in the Jack Abramoff scandal on Tuesday as he lost Georgia’s Republican race for lieutenant governor.
It marks a stunning turnaround for Reed, who had entered the race as the seemingly invincible front-runner. Dogged by questions about his ties to Abramoff, Reed faced a strong challenge from state Sen. Casey Cagle.
Reed lost after Cagle hammered away at his work with Abramoff, a lobbyist who pleaded guilty to fraud and corruption earlier this year. Reed has not been charged with a crime.
In Alabama, George Wallace Jr.–son of the legendary Alabama governor–lost his bid for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor to Luther Strange, a first-time candidate.
