A Cook County jury has awarded $15.8 million to a Harvey girl who suffered brain damage in 2001 after being struck by a YMCA van.

Roe Ann Lockhart, then 12, was crossing the street after school when the van struck her at 150th Street and Dixie Highway in Harvey, according to a lawsuit filed in 2001.

The girl, now 17, suffered permanent brain injuries and uses a wheelchair, said her attorney, Robert Clifford of Chicago.

Attorneys for the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago could not be reached for comment Friday.

The case was tried before a jury and Circuit Judge Daniel Locallo. Jurors found that Lockhart suffered damages of $22.6 million but that Lockhart was 30 percent responsible for the accident, so the award was reduced by that amount.
