R.I.P. my 30GB iPod: 2006-2007.
Death was officially pronounced Monday at 2:20 p.m. at the Michigan Avenue Apple Store’s Genius/iPod Bar.
Cause of death: failed hard drive.
This dearly beloved iPod lasted all of 11 months. I received it last spring at the Genius Bar after I took in the first 30GB iPod that I’d bought in May 2005.

I didn’t bang either one around. Honest.
The original warranty was one year, so when the first one fritzed out, Apple gave me a “new” (that is, factory-reconstituted) one. But that second iPod came with a mere 90-day warranty, so now I am iPod-less.
I called and e-mailed two different press reps at Apple last week asking the typical life expectancy of an iPod hard drive. Did I just have bad luck?
No response.
