Rabbi Israel Meir Karno, of blessed memory, passed away on the first night of Rosh Hashanah.
Rabbi Karno was born in Kelem, Lithuania, to a rabbinical family, and was the sole member of his family to survive the holocaust.
Rabbi Karno established a Yeshiva in Gorst, Lithuania, in 1938, and in 1940, assumed leadership of the Yeshiva at Trisik.
He escaped Europe in 1941 and was exiled to Siberia.
He arrived in France in 1946 and became the Rosh Yeshiva at Axle Ben. He settled in Chicago in 1948.
Rabbi Karno was Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation B’nai Israel of the West side and Albany Park, Congregation Mishne Ugmoro of Rogers Park, and Chanechai Yeshivot Mishne Ugmoro in Har N of, Jerusalem.
Rabbi Karno was head of the Chicago Rabbinical Council’s Religious Court until he made Aliyah to Israel in 1988.
Rabbi Karno is predeceased by his beloved wife Sara, of blessed memory, and leaves four daughters, 23 grandchildren, and 45 great grandchildren, and a multitude of congregants, friends, and students.
Shiva will be observed through Thursday night in Jerusalem and at 1621 W. Erie., Chicago.
