The work of a 19-year Chicago Fire Department veteran likely saved the lives of two dogs injured in a fire in the Bucktown neighborhood Friday night, officials said.

Firefighters found an adult dog and puppy in the rear porch of a building in the 1800 block of North Honore Street before 7 p.m., fire officials said.

One pitbull was critically injured and the other was in cardiac arrest. That’s when Tammy Rodriguez, an emergency medical technician, did CPR on both dogs and administered oxygen, apparently saving their lives, officials said.

No other injuries were reported.
