Dear Tom,
A recent column mentioned a high of 90 degrees on Oct. 4, 1951. Wasn’t there quite a snowstorm later that month?
—Jean Dillner, Maywood
Dear Jean,
The Oct. 4, 1951 high of 90 was followed by not one, but two early-season snowstorms, but both occurred in early November. Following the 90-degree day, that October remained mild, though a trace of snow did fall Oct. 20. A cold blast arrived as November opened and daytime highs were in the 20s and 30s with overnight lows in the teens. Following traces of snow on Nov. 1 and 2, the city was hit with a 4.4-inch snowfall Nov. 3 followed by a crippling 9.3-inch storm Nov. 6-7. The month ended with 14.3 inches of snow, nearly all of it falling during the first week. December was even snowier with 33.3 inches and the 1951-52 seasonal snowfall totaled a robust 66.4 inches.
