A man was taken into custody today after he pointed a weapon at officers and one of them fired back during a chase in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side.
The officers were conducting a narcotics investigation in the neighborhood around 11:45 a.m. when they tried to question the man and he took off running, according to Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
The officers began chasing him, and the man turned around and pointed a gun at them near 6100 S. Indiana Ave., Perez said. At least one of the officers fired but did not hit the man, Perez said. The man was arrested and a weapon was recovered, he said. No injuries were reported.
Less than a hour earlier in the nearby Woodlawn neighborhood, the back window of a squad car was shattered after an officer heard gunfire in the area, officials said.
The officer was driving near 63rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue at about 11 a.m. when he heard gunshots, Perez said. Soon afterwards, the back window of the squad car shattered.
The officer, who was on the way to a high school detail, was not injured. As of 1:45 p.m., no one was in custody.
The two incidents did not appear related.
