Renee Pina, who scored a few quick KOs on his way to the Chicago Golden Gloves finals, suffered one Saturday night night at Gordon Tech as Sebastian Antosiewicz roared out of his corner at the opening bell and began chopping down the taller Pina.

Within a couple of minutes Antosiewicz claimed the novice super heavyweight crown. A punishing left hook put Pina down in a neutral corner. Following the count, Pina went out to center ring, but was punched back into the same corner where he was pounded to his knees.

After a short count, the referee signaled that he had seen enough.

Miguel Guadarrama defeated Jose Quezada in a very close fight for the 132-pound open championship.

Guadarrama was the aggressor, but he paid a price getting in. When he did, though, it was Quezada who paid.

Guadarrama had a better second round as the pace slowed and Quezada was easier to hit, but there was little to choose between the two in the third round.

Mitch Nix rode a heavy left hook to victory over William Holyfield in the novice heavyweight division.

After a rough first round, Holyfield stepped it up in the second, but got caught with a flurry to the body in his own corner, turned his back and the referee gave him a standing eight count. The same thing happened seconds later in Nix’s corner and the referee halted the fight.

Limberth Ponce defeated Nathaniel Gallimore for the 165-pound open championship.

For the second night in a row, the fight that had the fans on their feet was a women’s division match. Jaime Jacobson defeated Shelley Kahles in a leather-slinger’s dream over three rounds.

Natalie Vakhorsky won the women’s senior novice 147-pound championship by defeating Jill Rizzo by decision. The shorter Vakhorsky was able to outjab Rizzo and keep her off balance much of the fight.

Matt Mannina seemed to impress everyone but the judges Saturday night at Gordon Tech while losing the decision in his Chicago Golden Gloves Senior Novice 156-pound championship bout to Leonard Brady.

Mannina had Brady confused during much of the fight with good movement and an attack to both the head and the body, but the judges didn’t see it that way, and the crowd let them know it with a cascade of boos.

Brady had landed many good counter punches, and that apparently is what impressed the officials.

In a very close fight, Katie Poplawski defeated Meredith Lyons for the women’s senior novice 119-pound title. Lyons was busier, but had trouble breaking through Poplawski’s peekaboo defense, and Poplawski was effective with an occasional counter punch.

Eddie Ramirez won the novice 147-pound trophy with a decision over Raymond Doroteo.

Sagging against the ropes, Doroteo took a standing eight count at the end of the first round after receiving a pair of one-twos followed by a telling right cross.

A right cross, followed by several body punches in the second round brought another standing eight count. But there was no quit in Doroteo, who landed quite a few effective shots in the third round but not enough to pull the fight out.

Jose Rivera won the 125-pound novice title after three fast rounds with Hector Guifarro.

In the first bout of the evening, Adrian Marsh won the 123-pound open championship with a hard-fought three-round decision over Kevin Martinez. Marsh eked out the verdict with hand speed and footwork against the aggressive Martinez.
