The debate we should be having — which Obama and his allies have, unfortunately, failed to focus on — is whether or not we’re going to accept the corporate party line and go along with the commodification of something that is actually both a necessity and a public responsibility that we all share. We don’t look at police and fire protection, mail delivery or public education as “products” or commodities; why should we assume that health care, then, is one?
