Illinois State 23, Western Illinois 3: Darrelynn Dunn rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns as the visiting Redbirds began the season 4-0 for the first time since 1967.
Dunn had a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter and scored on a 34-yarder early in the second as Illinois State (4-0, 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference), ranked No. 15 in FCS, jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead.
The Leathernecks (2-2, 0-1) committed three turnovers, accumulated just 137 total yards and reached the Redbirds’ half of the field just once.
Illinois State quarterback Matt Brown threw for 210 yards and a touchdown a week after setting single-game school records for completions (42) and passing yards (473) in a 54-51 double-overtime victory over Eastern Illinois.
Nikko Watson led Western Illinois with 60 yards on 14 carries.
