Houston 44, North Texas 21: Charles Sims rushed for a career-high 210 yards on 21 carries to lead the Cougars to the non-conference victory against visiting North Texas.
Sims, a junior running back, eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fifth time in his career and the first in back-to-back games. He scored on a 5-yard run early in the first quarter and also caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.
The Cougars (2-3) finished with 623 total yards, including 424 in the first half when they built a 31-14 lead. Houston sophomore quarterback David Piland completed 31-of-41 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns for his third 300-yard passing game this season.
North Texas senior running back Jeremy Brown rushed for a career-high 80 yards in seven carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that cut the deficit to 24-14. Brandin Byrd added 96 rushing yards in 19 carries for the Mean Green.
North Texas (2-4) cut the deficit back to 10 early in the third quarter, but Matt Hogan answered with a 50-yard field goal for the Cougars and Piland followed with a 5-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 41-21.
