Recap: Williams & Mary 69, Hampton 51
William & Mary 69, Hampton 51: Sophomore guard Marcus Thornton scored 24 points, including a 6-for-9 showing from 3-point range, as the host Tribe defeated the Pirates in the season opener for both teams.
Junior forward Tim Rusthoven and junior guard Brandon Britt added 18 and 17 points, respectively, as William & Mary pulled away with a 23-4 second-half run.
Du’Vaughn Maxwell led Hampton with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Pirates jumped out to a 16-15 lead before six straight Britt points helped set up William & Mary’s 28-20 halftime lead. After two Ke’Ron Brown free throws cut the Hampton deficit to 34-28 early in the second half, Thornton hit a 3-pointer to start the run.
Britt and Thornton combined to score the first 12 points of the spurt before Matt Rum hit a 3-pointer. A third Thornton 3-pointer and a Britt layup fittingly closed the 19-point swing with 9:59 left. Hampton responded with a 14-1 run, but after cutting the score to 58-44, Thornton nailed another 3-pointer.
