Recap: Saint Joseph’s 61, Yale 35

Saint Joseph’s 61, Yale 35: Langston Galloway scored 20 points and the Hawks’ defense stifled the visiting Bulldogs in a Coaches vs. Cancer Classic affair.

Halil Kanacevic and Ronald Roberts combined for 21 points and 23 rebounds for St. Joseph’s (1-0), which forced 20 turnovers and held Yale to 25 percent (13-for-52) shooting. St. Joseph’s will play Notre Dame in the semifinals Friday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Bulldogs (0-2) failed to get a player into double figures as Armani Cotton and Brandon Sherrod led the way with eight points apiece. Austin Morgan, who had 28 points in Yale’s opener against Sacred Heart, was held to four points on 1-of-9 shooting.

The Hawks opened the game with an 8-0 run capped by a C.J. Aiken jumper. Galloway had a 3-pointer and Kanacevic a layup to help push the advantage to 15-4 by the second media timeout.

The visitors hung around and trailed 34-26 after Cotton drilled a 3-pointer with 13:30 to go in the game. However, Kanacevic answered with a layup to begin a 17-0 run that Aiken again finished with a jumper to make it 51-26 with 5:27 remaining.
