HOUSTON, May 23 (Reuters) – The sole crude distillation unit

at Chevron Corp’s 245,000 barrel per day (bpd) Richmond,

California, refinery was nearing planned production levels for

the first time in 9-1/2 months, said sources familiar with

operations at the San Francisco Bay-area refinery on Thursday.

The CDU, which does the initial refining of crude oil coming

into the refinery and provides feedstock for all other units,

was shut by an Aug. 6 fire that heavily damaged the unit’s

piping.

During the shutdown, Chevron’s production of motor fuels was

cut in half.
