Crystal Lake police will be stepping up enforcement on drunken driving over the Halloween weekend.

The department is planning an “aggressive” enforcement effort from Friday through Sunday, according to a news release.

The crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds issued by the Illinois Department of Transportation, police said.

Also, those who call in suspected impaired drivers who are later arrested for DUI can be eligible for a cash reward, through a Drunkbusters program by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists. Those reporting impaired driving should call 911.

The Police Department released tips for those out celebrating Halloween:

* Before festivities begin, plan a way to get home safely at the end of the night.

* Designate a sober driver.

* If you are impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, use public transportation or sleep it off at the party location.

* Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunken driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.

* If you see a drunken driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

* If you know someone who is about to drive or ride after drinking, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.
