Seven homicides were reported in Chicago in the last week, with two of the killings occurring in the Austin community area on the West Side, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
On Friday, a 41-year-old man was shot to death in 5200 block of West Madison Street, police said. Two days earlier, a 41-year-old man was fatally shot in the first block of North Lorel Avenue, according to officials.
Austin, which counted 98,500 residents in the 2010 Census, has reported 30 homicides so far this year, the most of Chicago’s 77 community areas, according to RedEye data.
Austin–which is loosely bounded by Milwaukee District/West Line tracks on the north, Roosevelt Road on the south, Kenton Avenue on the east and Austin Boulevard on the west–recorded 31 homicides last year, down from 37 killings in 2012, a RedEye analysis found.
Citywide, gunshot homicides were logged in the last week in Englewood, Humboldt Park, West Englewood and West Garfield Park, according to RedEye data.
Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man was stabbed to death Monday in the 3000 block of East Cheltenham Place in South Shore, officials said.
October ended last week with 34 reported homicides, up from 32 killings in October 2013, based on police information.
Five homicides have been reported so far this month. Twenty-eight killings were recorded in November 2013, according to a RedEye analysis.
