The Chicago Fire moved to strengthened their defense Tuesday by signing center back Adaílton, who since June has been playing for Brazilian Serie A side Esporte Clube Bahia.

Adailton, 31, will join the roster upon receipt of his P1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

“Adaílton is a strong, powerful defender,” Fire coach and director of soccer Frank Yallop said in a statement. “This is a position we were looking to fill, so I’m pleased that we will be adding a player with his experience to our team.”

Adaílton, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound Salvador native, began his professional career with Vitória in 2003.
