College of Lake County women’s basketball standout Kaylie Kanzler was named National Junior College Athletic Association District D Player of the Week for the first week of February.

The freshman who graduated from Grant High in Fox Lake, had 30 points, six rebounds and three assists in a win over Morton College, and had 17 points and seven rebounds in a loss to Moraine Valley.

For the season, Kanzler is averaging 21.1 points – currently ranking her 12th in the nation — and 8.8 rebounds per game. The game against Morton was the fourth time this season in which Kanzler has scored more than 30 points.

“Kaylie has done a fantastic job for us, and is well deserving of this award; I am just surprised it took her this long to win it. She has had a tremendous year for us,” said CLC coach Kyle Brokmeier. “What is even more impressive is how tough she is. She has battled all season with a variety of injuries. Her wrist hurt early in the season, but she kept playing. Her knee shut her down for a little bit, and just as she was starting to get her timing back, she missed some games with a broken nose.”

Kanzler missed five games in January with a strained knee ligament, and then two more because of a broken nose. She is currently playing with a mask.

In the NJCAA, two regions — 4 and 13 — make up District D. Region 4 is for all the jucos in the northern half of Illinois. District 13 is Wisconsin, Minnesota and both Dakotas.
