Two men opened fire on each other during a road-rage shooting Thursday afternoon in Gurnee, police said.
Gurnee police Deputy Chief William Meyer said the shootout happened just after 1 p.m. at Washington and Greenleaf streets, a busy intersection with multiple medical buildings nearby.
“A secretary of state police officer heard the shots and called it in,” Meyer said.
Both vehicles were traveling west on Washington Street when gunfire erupted in the intersection, Meyer said.
One driver then turned around and attempted to flee, but Waukegan police stopped him without incident and took him into custody, Meyer said. The other driver continued west past the Gurnee police station, where he was arrested nearby, Meyer said.
“We’ve recovered several shell casings at the scene,” Meyer said.
Police impounded both vehicles, Meyer said. The two men were in custody but no charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
“It’s going to take a little while to sort things out,” Meyer said. “We’re not sure who started what.”
Meyer said it was fortunate nobody else was injured considering there were other vehicles in the intersection and the proximity of nearby businesses.
“It was definitely very dangerous,” he said.
The intersection was closed for about two hours during the police investigation.
