Disgusted by our national leadership
The nation has strayed away from the traditional values of national strength, discipline, hard work, consequences for actions, traditional family values and all the things that made this nation great, and dove into this idiotic political correctness that is driving the nation into chaos.
The police that serve and protect us are targets for angry young men who see no value in human life, and are vile and despicable racists. Some are making excuses for these murders. Have they lost their collective minds?
We are teaching children that striving for excellence is no longer as important as before; that it is OK to just get by, because the government will take care of you forever.
We are making babies and walking away from the responsibility to raise and nurture them. Thousands of kids are sticking needles in their arms and paying the ultimate price. The war on drugs is a joke, with porous borders and payoffs at all levels, with no real solution and business as usual.
I served this nation for 21 years in uniform and 22 more at the VA, and for the first time I am truly disgusted with the direction of the leadership of this nation and the total impotence of our citizens and elected officials to stand up and say enough is enough. I hope that come November, the nation wakes up.

Make America even better
Listening to patriotic songs during the recent Fourth of July celebrations served as a reminder to this writer, and I hope to my fellow Americans, just how lucky we are — Lucky to be part of this great nation, the light of the world and the hope of the world.
I say this in spite of our faults and our blemishes. We sometimes go off the deep end and suffer through growing pains. We are not always civil to each other, and quite often allow racial and religious intolerance to raise its ugly head.
We have managed to survive these turbulent times because the majority of our citizens are benevolent, compassionate and kind-hearted.
Throughout our history, people have sacrificed much to reach our shores because of the belief that this is the land that with hard work, talent and determination, they can raise themselves up and provide a decent life for their families.
We are still evolving as a people and as a country, and even though our principles and values take a hit from time to time, we manage to regain our footing and forge ahead.
It is incumbent on each and every one of us to work hard to make this land of opportunity even better.
Ned L. McCray, Tinley Park
