Anderson Animal Shelter celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016 with more than 3,000 adoptions.

(The animals) often arrive at the shelter in very bad shape,” said Beth Drake, the shelter’s executive director. “It’s so rewarding to be able to turn their lives around and create happy endings from heartbreaking stories.”

The shelter, 1000 South LaFox Road (Route 31) in South Elgin, reported the adoption of 1,871 dogs; 1,094 cats and 11 rabbits.

The shelter also found homes for eight birds, eight rats, seven guinea pigs, four hamsters, three gerbils, one hermit crab and one hedgehog.

“We are extremely proud to have found forever homes for over 3,000 previously homeless pets in 2016,” Drake said. “To imagine them now, happy with their new families, is very gratifying.”
