A Wadsworth tobacco store was robbed Thursday night by a man who fired a shot at an employee before fleeing, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.

A statement issued by Sgt. Christopher Covelli early Friday reported that deputies were dispatched around 7:05 p.m. Thursday to Tobacco Outlet, 41474 N. Route 41, for a call about an armed robbery. The statement added that sheriff’s deputies arrived “and learned the store clerk was robbed and the offender fired a shot.”

“Preliminary investigation shows just prior to the 911 call, a male wearing a mask, black hat, dark-colored jacket, jeans, black shoes, gloves and armed with a handgun entered the Tobacco Outlet and robbed the clerk,” the statement reported, adding that an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. “The offender ordered the clerk to lay on the ground and the offender fired a shot at the clerk, but missed. The offender then fled.”

Sheriff’s investigators are asking anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office at 847-549-5200 or Lake County CrimeStoppers at 847-662-2222.
