Ten Naperville businesses are among the state’s “super scofflaws,” identified as among those owing the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority a total of nearly $12 million in unpaid tolls.
The owners of two of those companies protested they were being targeted, with one saying she owed only $85 and the other calling the toll collection system “a big, frigging scam.”
Tollway officials recently published their Fourth Quarter 2016 list of “Super Scofflaws,” or businesses and motorists who allegedly owe the most money in unpaid tolls. The 422 firms and motorists owe the state $11,956,871, numbers show.
The top three offenders are MMM Trans Inc., of Wheeling, which has amassed $890,749 in unpaid tolls; 101 Express Limo, based in Prospect Heights, which owes $790,481; and TGL Logistics Inc., of Glendale Heights, which has $633,503 in delinquent tolls.
No Naperville companies made the agency’s Top 10 list. Action Transportation Services, which shows no address in Naperville, landed at No 14, owing $155,808.
Laury Transportation LLC, which reportedly operates from an apartment on Naperville’s far northwest side, was No. 117, with unpaid tolls totaling $19,858. It was followed by Midwest Industries Inc./DBA AmeriClean at No. 176, with $9,291 in toll bills; Excavating Services of Illinois Inc., No. 202, with $7,186 in unpaid tolls; and TeamLogic IT at No. 253, and owing $4,902, according to the tollway.
The other five Naperville-identified businesses on the list were Comprehensive Medical Staffing at No. 291, with $3,682 in unpaid tolls; Archway Transportation Inc., No. 324, with bills totaling $2,709; Glidden Brokerage Co. Inc., No. 373, with $1,767 in outstanding tolls; Vintage Restoration, No. 393, with $1,489 in bills; and Rigby Development Group, No. 416, which owes $1,065, the tollway authority said.
Tollway officials did not return telephone calls to provide more information about the scofflaw list.
The owner of Comprehensive Medical Staffing, who would only identify herself as Marilyn, said Wednesday she believed the state is “using the tolls to rip us off.”
Marilyn said she paid what she maintained was her total delinquent toll bill of $85 on Dec. 23. She said the tollway charges exorbitant late fees, which she characterized as being “bulls— here, bulls— there.”
“They rip you off,” Marilyn said. “This is why people are leaving (the state.) They have no respect for the business owner at all.”
The owner of Excavating Services of Illinois Inc., who declined to give his name, called the tollway operations “a scam.”
“I have my attorney on this, and it’s all over $200 in tolls” the owner said his son incurred without telling him.
“I already paid them a bunch last year” in penalties, the man said. “For a couple years now, I never got their invoices in the mail (because) they were sending the bills to the wrong address. I’ve been at the same address for 15 years.”
“It’s highway robbery is what it is. I think it’s a big, frigging scam.”
Telephone messages left Wednesday with the other eight Naperville companies on the list were not returned.
