Police surrounded a Dolton house for nearly eight hours Wednesday believing he had barricaded himself in the home after allegedly robbing and shooting a male, officials said.

But about at 8:30 p.m., when officers went into the home, no one was there, Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins said.

The man allegedly robbed a male who responded to a Craigslist advertisement for an iPhone, officials said. The suspect got into the victim’s vehicle shortly after noon in the 15100 block of Oak Street, Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins said.

The two males eventually had a struggle before the victim was shot in his side, Collins said. The victim was in critical condition at an area hospital, officials said.

One neighborhood resident told police that the suspect ran to a relative’s house in the 15100 block of Evers Street, Collins said.

Police got a call about the alleged incident at about 12:30 p.m., Collins said.

Dolton police and officers in command vehicles were on Evers Street Wednesday night.

At one point, the suspect’s family, believing he was in the house, had tried to coax him out of the home, but they had no success, Collins said.

Police said they are still searching for the suspect.
