Funding applications available
Applications for 2018 funding through the city of Hammond’s Charitable Gaming Fund are now available from the Mayor’s Office at Hammond City Hall, 5925 Calumet Ave. A fund is open to local not-for-profit organizations that can demonstrate that their project, activities and services provide direct benefit to the citizens of Hammond. The fund and application process is overseen by the Gaming Advisory Committee, which represents a cross section of Hammond residents and City Council members and is chaired by Marty Wielgos. Porter County Jail accepting applications
The Porter County Jail is currently accepting applications for the position of probationary jail officer. There is no deadline or set number of jail officers being hired during the open application process. However, those interested are encouraged to return their applications promptly. Applications are available in person at the records window at the Porter County sheriff’s office or from the website at www.portercountysheriff.com/employment. Snowshoe Hikes at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Enjoy a snowshoe hike from 1-3 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 28 on a trail outside the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center, 1215 North State Road 49, Chesterton. Snowshoes are provided for free. Join a ranger at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center for a brief indoor program on winter and the use of snowshoes followed by the hike. A limited number of snowshoes are provided, or hikers can bring their own. If there is not enough snow for snowshoeing, a traditional hike will be held. Friends of the Library to host gala
The Friends of the Gary Public Library will sponsor a gala evening Jan. 26 at the library, 220 W. Fifth Ave., Gary. The gala is a special preview event in celebration of the reopening of the main library building as the new Gary Public Library and Cultural Center. The evening will begin with a meet and greet at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person at 219-886-2484, ext. 326. Ticket deadline is Jan. 19. The Gary Public Library and Cultural Center will open for service Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony. An open house will follow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Open registration at adult learning center
The TriTown Learning Center, an affiliate of the Center of Workforce Innovations, has open registration and classes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, 3-7 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays for individuals to prepare for their high school equivalency diploma (GED) at 1515 Lincoln Highway, Schererville. Classes are free to Indiana residents. Skill training also is available for welder, certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, CDL, production technician, HVAC technician, EMT, pharmacy technician, retail sales and hospitality positions. Theatre at the Center costume, vintage clothing sale
Theatre at the Center will host a costume and vintage clothing sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1040 Ridge Road, Munster. More than 300 wardrobe items will be offered to the public at deep-discount prices to allow for more storage space for future inventory and the costume design needs for the 2018 season of productions. MLK Community Summit
The Morning Bishop Theatre Playhouse, Inc.’s STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) after school program at the Charter School of the Dunes will host the 11th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Summit, “A Day of Service,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the school, 7300 East Melton Road, Gary.
