A man was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting in a West Side alley Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said.
The man was walking in an alley in the 800 block of South Claremont Avenue about 12:45 p.m. when he was shot in the chest, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. He was one of at least three people wounded in shootings since early Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The man was in the alley when a dark-colored vehicle he didn’t recognize drove up and someone inside fired shots at him, police said.
After the shooting, police wrapped bands of yellow and red crime scene tape around a three-flat in the 2300 block of West Taylor Street, where an ambulance picked up the gunshot victim who apparently had made his way from the original shooting scene.
About eight shots were fired in the area, prompting some people who were walking on Western Avenue to run for cover, witnesses said.
Carmelo Vargas, who was cleaning carpets at a home across the street from the three-flat, had come downstairs for more cleaning solution when he noticed emergency responders tending to a man in his mid-20s who was bleeding from the mouth but was talking to paramedics.
The victim was picked up near the start of an alley, which police blocked off from Taylor to Polk streets.
