A 15-year-old Western Springs boy was killed Monday evening after being struck by a freight train on the BNSF tracks west of the Central Avenue pedestrian crossing.

Police responded after the 7:46 p.m. incident found the boy unresponsive about 300 feet west of the crossing. He was taken to La Grange Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m.

The investigation is continuing, but police said a preliminary investigation suggests the boy ran into the path of a moving freight train traveling east.
