The Earth and Arbor Day Celebration in downtown Northbrook on April 21 attracted an estimate crowd of 1,000 people eager to learn more about environmental practices in the village.
The village has been partnering with the Northbrook Park District since 1989 to hold the annual event, according to the village website. The event included a recycling center for residents, a vendor exhibition and volunteer opportunities.
“You can see the kind of dedication the community has,” said Erik Jensen, assistant to the village manager. “It’s grown every year since its inception.”
Recycling included the acceptance of American flags for respectful handling by Northfield Township with assistance from local Boy Scouts.
“It just means a lot,” said Deanna Hardt, a public works employee. “It’s the pride behind it.”
Her son Andrew Hardt, 21, has been a member of the United States Navy for nearly three years.
