Marion County is horse country in Florida. Think picturesque rolling hills with lone 100-year-old oaks in vast fields separated by long stretches of fence posts where mares and stallions hold courts.
Right in the middle of horse country is the Grand Oaks Resort & Museum, which bills itself as America’s Equestrian Resort.
It caters to the horse-set, complete with equine accommodations and events, but has something for everyone.
While closed until fall 2018, the Grand Oaks Museum formerly known as the Florida Carriage Museum, boasts horse-related artifacts and artwork as well as more than 160 antique horse-drawn carriages from Europe and America. The refurbished version will also focus on collectible cars. While closed, in lieu of museum tours, the resort offers visitors barn tours every Sunday.
Also worth the trip are the carriage ride tours of the 400-acre property. The resort has both 6-seat ($90) and 12-seat carriages ($120) as well as special Sunday Triple Crown packages for $33 a person that include carriage ride, brunch buffet and stabling tour.
The lush grounds, breathtaking views, and one-of-a-kind venue locations create a unique environment for overnight stays of day trippers.
Originally The Grand Oaks was only a museum and rehabilitation center for horses, until Tom Golisano acquired the company. He expanded the property by adding a resort, retail shops, all-new arenas and 20,000 square feet of meeting space. The family-friendly as well as pet-friendly resort hosts equestrian and dog competitions throughout the year, most of which are free for spectators and many held at its covered pavilion.
Events include those for he Special Olympics as well as dressage, hunter and jumper competitions.
The property hosts 18 homes and cottages, 170 stalls, and 17 miles of nature trails and walkways as well as a clubhouse pool. There is more than a day’s worth of sightseeing and activities to choose from with on-site amenities including the forthcoming museum, horseback and carriage rides, Cowboy Church, The Bistro, live entertainment, full-service bar, gift shops and salon.
Choose from cottages attached to barns that sleep up 12. Even when there are no special events, weekdays allow visitors to take a seat around any one of the arenas to watch some of the country’s top drivers and riders train for equestrian events. For those ready to pick up the reins, on-site trainers are available for private or group lessons.
