Will County health officials said the seventh rabid bat of the year was found in a New Lenox home.
On July 31, the homeowners were awakened by a live bat flying around the master bedroom in which they were sleeping, according to a news release.
Will County Animal Control was called to the home the following morning, and the bat captured and sent to the Illinois Department of Public Health for testing. A positive rabies test was determined Friday, according to the release, and the home’s two residents were referred for rabies post-exposure treatment.
Health officials noted that a month had passed since the last rabies-infected bat had been found in Will County.
Other rabid bats have been found this year in Homer Glen, Joliet, Monee and Naperville, according to the county.
