The funeral for slain McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Woodstock North High School, officials announced.
Details on parking and the route of the funeral procession will be released later, they said.
Classes at the high school will be canceled Wednesday to accommodate the service, Superintendent Mike Moan of Woodstock Community Unit School District 200 said in an online message. Teachers will still design “educational opportunities” for students that day, he said.
“While it is always a difficult decision to cancel classes during the school year, we believe it is the appropriate decision to allow the community to properly honor a fallen hero,” Moan said.
Keltner’s visitation will be Tuesday, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road in Huntley. A formal law enforcement walk-through will take place at 6 p.m.
Keltner, a 35-year-old father of two young boys, was shot at a Rockford hotel Thursday as he was trying to arrest a fugitive as part of a U.S. marshals task force. The alleged gunman, Floyd Brown, fled the scene but was captured after a high-speed chase and a six-hour armed standoff.
Keltner died from his wounds several hours later. Brown, who was hospitalized after his capture, faces first-degree murder charges in Winnebago County and, because Keltner was working with the marshals, federal murder charges that could make him eligible for the death penalty.
