Following tradition, Lincolnwood jump-started the season by turning on holiday lights, delivering Santa and staging a treasure hunt, all designed to lift residents’ spirits.

“In its seventh year, Lincolnwood Lights is a festive way to gather with fellow community members and kick off the winter holiday season,” said Melissa Rimdzius-Marsh, director of parks and recreation.
“I love this, I love the tradition,” said Mayor Barry Bass of the Dec. 5 Lincolnwood Lights holiday event. “I like that, for a short period of time, that everyone, no matter what their background is, there’s a sense of more togetherness and peace and quiet in the world.

“I really love the holiday season,” Bass said. “It’s inclusive, season of lights for everyone.”
A holiday treasure hunt yielded trinkets and treats for children ages 10 and younger. Adults helped little ones find prizes such as metallic kazoos and snowman erasers.
Hot cocoa and sweets were served inside village hall. A story was read aloud courtesy of the Lincolnwood Public Library. Tall heater lamps offered warmth on the 45-degree evening.
Honor choir members from Lincoln Hall Middle School performed season songs.
“It’s really fun to see them, it’s a treat for them, and a treat for me,” said Erin Forrest, choir director and music teacher at Lincoln Hall Middle School.
“I’m really excited to perform,” said Lorelai Mandal, 12, a seventh-grader from Lincolnwood. “I think it’s really important to participate and give joy and something back to the community.”
Talia Spector, 11, a sixth-grader, celebrates Hanukkah.

“The holidays are my favorite season,” she said.
After a countdown, holiday lights were illuminated on the promenade. Santa Claus arrived by fire engine and visited with families. Cell phone photos and camera flashes were numerous.
“I just hope for good health, a good year,” said Tracy Frank, a 2007 Niles West High School graduate from Skokie who formerly lived in Lincolnwood. Frank brought her daughter Bailey, 1, who will be 2 on New Year’s Eve.

Nada Stulac of Lincolnwood said she hoped the new year brings “health, happiness, joy and laughter.”
