A Hobart police officer and his K-9 partner were released from medical care after a shoplifting call Saturday ended with an accident in which their vehicle repeatedly rolled over.
The officers were responding to a call of a shoplifter armed with scissors in Target on Route 30, Hobart police spokesman Capt. Jim Gonzales said Sunday.
Their vehicle was turning southbound into Target’s parking lot when an eastbound car struck the passenger side of the marked SUV causing it to roll several times, Gonzales said.
The officer, an eight-year veteran of the Hobart Police Department, was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries and released, while Butch, the police dog, spent the night for observation at the Hobart Animal Clinic, Gonzales said. The people in the BMW that hit the police vehicle were also taken to an area hospital, but their conditions were not immediately available, he said.
Both vehicles were totaled in the accident, Gonzales said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash, he said.
