Elgin candidate petitions can start being circulated Aug. 25

Candidate petitions to run in the 2021 Elgin municipal election are now available in the Elgin City Clerk’s Office at 150 Dexter Court and can be circulated starting Tuesday, Aug. 25.

There are four council seats open, each with a four-year term, a city news release said.

Council member candidates must be a qualified elector/registered voter, a city resident for at least one year prior to the election, up to date with all tax and other payments due to the city, and not convicted in the U.S. of any “infamous crime, bribery, perjury or other felony,” the release said.

Candidacy petitions must be filed at the clerk’s office between 8 a.m. Nov. 16 and 5 p.m. Nov. 23. Ballot placement is determined by order in which the documents were submitted, the release said.

If more than 16 candidates file, a primary election will be held Feb. 23, the release said. Otherwise, the general election will be April 6.

For more information, contact the Illinois State Board of Elections at 312-814-6440 or www.elections.il.us, or the Elgin City Clerk’s Office at 847-931-5660.

Elgin website, public access TV to show ‘Much Ado’ performance

A virtual version of the Shakespeare comedy “Much Ado about Nothing” presented by Goodly Creatures Theatre will be available through Sept. 21 thanks to an arrangement made with the city of Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

The performance can be viewed at the arts commission’s webpage, accessible at cityofelgin.org/; via Goodly Creature’s YouTube Channel, and on Elgin’s public access television channel (Channel 17 on Comcast and WOW and Channel 99 on AT&T) on Sundays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. The performance is offered free to the public.

The play was originally to be presented as an Elgin Shakespeare-in-the-Park performance but had to be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s been a challenge, but doing everything we can to keep the arts alive in Elgin is our priority,” said Amanda Harris, assistant to the city manager for special projects and the arts.

St. Charles warns of scam calls from fake ComEd reps

The city of St. Charles is warning residents to stay vigilant of scams since some residents have reported a company claiming to be ComEd calling residents threatening immediate disconnection of electric service.

The caller instructs the resident to go to a convenience store and purchase a specific kind of pre-paid cash card in the amount of $500. If residents are contacted about electric services and the caller demands payment or threatens electric disconnection, they should hang up and notify the St. Charles Police Department at 630-377-4435.

The city of St. Charles maintains its own electric utility. Any contact about electric services will come from the city of St. Charles Utility Billing office. The city never calls to demand payment on the spot to avoid immediate disconnection.

For more information, call 630-377-4426 or email utilitybilling@stcharlesil.gov.
