A Waukegan man has died from wounds he received during an exchange of gunfire last month in a store parking lot in the Fountain Square plaza area, the Lake County coroner’s office said Wednesday.
Emanuel Perez, 25, died Tuesday from wounds he received in the shooting in the Wal-Mart parking lot. He had been hospitalized since the Feb. 19 shooting, and he succumbed from complications of multiple wounds, the coroner’s office said.
Police said Perez was the passenger in a vehicle driven by a Round Lake-area woman named Desteny Rodgriguez. They had arranged a meeting with two other men in order to trade or exchange guns, police said.
However, Rodriguez attempted to rob the men, and the two groups exchanged gunfire, police said.
Both vehicles drove off, and the SUV driven by Rodriguez crashed into other vehicles about two and a half miles away, at Washington Street and Westwaukee Road, police said.
One of the men in the other vehicle sustained a superficial gunshot wound, police said.
Perez was transported to a hospital, and Rodriguez, 23, was charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon. She remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $150,000 bail.
