A Round Lake man is charged with punching the mother of their newborn baby after a hospital room argument over what to name their child, Lake County authorities said.

Tevin M. Hoskins, 27, appeared in Lake County bond court Tuesday on two counts of domestic battery.

He was arrested by Highland Park police Monday after the alleged assault at Highland Park Hospital.

Hoskins had gone to the hospital to see the mother and their child, who had been born there less than 12 hours before, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Caitlin Valiulis said at the hearing.

He was in their room when he and the mother began arguing over what to name the child, the prosecutor said. At some point, Hoskins punched the mother in the head, causing a cut that required two stitches to close, Valiulis said. The woman also had bruising on an arm, the prosecutor said.

The newborn was with nurses at the time of the alleged assault and was not in the room, the prosecutor said.

Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered bail set at $35,000 for Hoskins, who was remanded to the Lake County jail. The judge said during the hearing that Hoskins had a 2021 battery conviction in Wisconsin on his record. Information on that offense was not immediately available.
