A 50-year-old Calumet City woman lying in the road died after she was hit by a car in Munster Tuesday night, police said.

Officers were called at 9:30 p.m. to 45th and White Oak avenues. There, they found the woman in the outer lane on 45th Avenue with “obvious trauma” and “no signs of life,” Munster Lt. John Peirick said in a release.

A 73-year-old Munster woman driving a silver SUV told police said she was driving west on 45th Avenue when she saw something in the roadway, but was unable to avoid the woman before she struck her.

Munster Police have not released either woman’s identity.

The Calumet City woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Munster driver was uninjured and released at the scene, Peirick said. Alcohol was not a factor, he said.

Police weren’t sure why the woman was lying in the road, but she was only struck once, Peirick said in an email.

The investigation by Munster Police and the Lake County Sheriff Accident Reconstruction Team is ongoing.
