Kiwanis Club of Naperville awards scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Naperville recently awarded several $2,000 college scholarships to graduating seniors who are members of the Kiwanis Key Club at Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley high schools.

Metea Valley winners were Alopi Shah, who plans to attend the University of Illinois Chicago and major in biology, and Priyanka Krishana, who plans to major in finance at Indiana University Bloomington.

At Waubonsie Valley, scholarship recipients were Madeline Wueste, who plans to study business at the University of Texas in Austin, and Nithya Mullapudi, who plans to study finance at Indiana University Bloomington.

Key Club efforts this school year included making superhero capes for the pediatric units in area hospitals, visiting nursing homes, writing letters to servicemen and hosting food drives.

Food trucks, music, games at Whalon Lake on July 22

The Forest Preserve District of Will County will host Fun and Food Trucks from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Whalon Lake, located on Royce Road, west of Illinois Route 53, in Naperville.

The event will include live music, lawn games, a bounce house, giveaways and several food trucks, including Grumpy Gaucho, Life’s a Slice and The Flight Deck. A specialty beverage truck will also be on site.

From 5 to 7 p.m., educational animals, including turtles and snakes, will be on hand from the Hidden Oaks Nature Center.

Park district plans playground reopening celebrations

The Naperville Park District will hold reopening celebrations for three recently renovated playgrounds.

Ribbon-cuttings will be held July 19 at Eagle Park, 724 Bakewell Lane; July 26 at Kendall Park, 84 W. 5th Ave.; and Aug. 2 at A. George Pradel Park, 4519 Pradel Drive. Each is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

The new equipment will be ready to try out and refreshments served.

In the event of inclement weather, the celebrations will be rescheduled for 5 p.m. on the following day.

Naperville police to present college safety lecture

The Naperville Police Department will host a lecture, “Safety for the College-Bound Student,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave.

The lecture is for college freshmen and their parents and will talk about drug and alcohol education and personal safety information. Police will discuss making choices, the consequences of bad choices and how to avoid becoming a victim of a crime.

Mary Browning, a crime prevention specialist with the Naperville Police Department, said the class will help students learn crime prevention strategies and alert them to ways to protect themselves from the dangers of campus life.
